Ceramides

Ceramides are often called a 'wonder ingredient' in skincare but what actually are they & how do they help our skin? Ceramides are a type of lipid (fat) and a make up a major part of our skin layer the Stratum Corneum. They are present in the spaces between skin cells and work like a glue to to hold them together. Their main benefit is to provide a waterproof protective barrier and prevent moisture loss in the skin whilst keeping bacteria and pollutants out.

As we age our Ceramide levels deplete and external factors such as pollution, poor diet and UV rays can also help to lower our levels. For best results in helping to boost our natural levels use a Vitamin A based skin cream such as the Environ skincare range as this helps to normalise the skin and creates healthy keratinocyte cells which are involved in making ceramides.
